Jean-Jacques de Boissieu: A fine French landscape
painter of the eighteenth century, Jean-Jacques de Boissieu will always
be best remembered for his etchings. Born in Lyon he studied art first in
his native city before traveling to Paris where he became close friends
with both Joseph Vernet and Greuze. He concluded his artistic education
in Italy. |
|
Jean-Jacques de Boissieu quickly established a strong reputation for both
his landscapes and figure studies. After spending his early years in Paris
he returned to Lyon in 1764 and lived there for the remainder of his life.
He was elected to the Academy of Lyon in 1780. |
|
De Boissieu looked to the great Dutch masters of the seventeenth
century as the primary inspiration for his art, most notably, van de Velde,
Ostade, Ruisdael and Berchem. During the last thirty years of his life he
turned almost exclusively to the art of etching. Altogether Jean-Jacques de Boissieu's complete
graphic oeuvre numbers some one hundred and forty plates. Almost all are
dated in the plate and bear his familiar 'D.B.' monogramme. Such is the
case with Crossing the Stream, one of de Boissieu's largest and
most impressive works of art. |
|
G. C. Williamson lists Crossing the Stream as one
of Jean-Jacques de Boissieu's greatest etchings. * Unlike a number of his compositions
it is not based upon the design of a Dutch or French painter but is entirely
of his own creation. The treatment of landscape, figures and cattle is beautifully
handled and one can clearly see how he has been cited as one of the most
accomplished French etchers of his time. |
