Edouard de Beaumont's original lithograph, Monsieur le Comte de Filouski is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published in Paris by Le Charivari between 1840 and 1845 for his first series of lithographs created under the title of Les Grecs de Paris (The Greeks of Paris). This impression contains the text on verso, as usual. At that time the term 'Grec' (Greek) referred to the rather foppish and fashionably dressed dandies who inhabited the many haunts of upper crust Paris, and Count Filouski clearly fits this category. This scene depicts an elegantly dressed gentleman, top hat in hand, leaning against a bureau adorned with a statue and a card holder and in the background two smartly dressed gentlemen are playing cards. It is signed, "Edouard de Beaumont" by the artist within the stone to the lower right, and contains the series title, "Les Grecs de Paris", in the upper margin. In the lower margin, it contains the printer's name and address "Chez Aubert & Cie. Pl. de la Bourse 29", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie" in the lower margin, and full title in French, "Monsieur le comte de Filouski, ayant deja recu a l'etranger une foule d'ordres, et qui finira par recevoir en France celui d'aller habiter Brest ou Toulon." which loosely translates to (The Count of Filouski , who has already received a multitude of offers abroad, ends up in France receiving one to go and live in Brest or Toulon.) This is a fine, original example of the lithographic art art created by the French artist, Charles Francois Edouard de Beaumont and of the classic satirical imagery of Le Charivari. |

Note: | Charles Francois Edouard de Beaumont 'Edouard de Beaumont': A student of Boisselier, Charles Edouard de Beaumont first exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon of 1838. Concentrating first upon landscape paintings Edouard de Beaumont later turned to genre paintings and continued to exhibit his art through France well into the later decades of the nineteenth century. |
Lithography was no less important to Charles-Edouard de Beaumont than his career as a painter. He illustrated such classic books as Notre-Dame de Paris (1844) and Le Diable Amoureux (1854) with his lithographs as well as being a constant contributor to Paris periodicals and journals such as Le Charivari. His lithographic art was in great demand during the 1840's and in particular his humorous representations of fashions and habits. In this regard he began to rival his famous contemporary, Gavarni. In fact, de Beaumont was often called, "le Gavarni du Pauvre".
This original lithograph is typical of Edouard de Beaumont's great art. At that time the term 'Grec' (Greek) referred to the rather foppish and fashionably dressed dandies who inhabited the many haunts of upper crust Paris. The affectatious Count Filouski clearly fits this category. Monsieur le Comte de Filouski ... was the first of a series of lithographs the artist created under the title of Les Grecs de Paris. The scene depicts an elegantly dressed gentleman, top hat in hand, leaning against a bureau adorned with a statue and a card holder. In the background, two seated gentlemen are playing cards. This lithograph hails from the Quatrorzieme Anne.- No. 143 issue, dated May 23, 1845. It is signed, "Edouard de Beaumont" by the artist within the stone to the lower right, and contains the series title, "Les Grecs de Paris", in the upper margin, In the lower margin, it contains the printer's full address "Chez Aubert & Cie. Pl. de la Bourse 29" "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie" in the lower margin., and full title, "Monsieur le comte de Filouski, ayant deja recu a l'etranger une foule d'ordres, et qui finira par recevoir en France celui d'aller habiter Brest ou Toulon." which loosely translates to (The Count of Filouski, who has already received a multitude of offers abroad, ends up in France receiving one to go and live in Brest or Toulon.". The Heidelberg University Library includes an impression of this orignal lithograph in its permanent collection, Le Charivari, 1945 (No. 121-151), #559 .
The Golden Age of French satirical art is generally held to be the era from 1830 to 1850. Founded by the great writer and editor, Charles Philipon (1804-1862), Le Charivari commenced its daily publication in 1832. By means of both its art and commentaries this journal led the attack upon France's political leaders, royalty, priesthood, and any other possibly corrupt individuals. Artists Philipon commissioned for satirical lithographs included such masters as Daumier, Gavarni andTravies. Many more great artists, however, contributed original lithographs to the publication which today comprise a wonderful resource of French life and humour from this long past age.
