Note: |
Leon David: During the early twentieth
century many artists in France devoted their energies to the art of the
etching and aquatint printed in colours. Jean Francois Raffaelli was
the first great artist to devote himself almost exclusively to this medium.
In the following decade other masters such as Armand Coussens, Ferdinand
Luigini, Charles Houdard and many others produced brilliant colour etchings
and aquatints dealing with landscapes, topographical views and figure
studies. |
|
A fine printmaker, Leon David created both colour aquatints and etchings of
both landscape and topographical views based upon his own designs. He
also etched a number of works based upon the estampe gallants of eighteenth
century French masters. In the former category, Leon David etched views
of many French cities as well as areas of both Belgium and Holland. |
|
Ghent Gateway, Bruges is one of Leon David's finest
topographical views. Depicting this famous landmark at night, he successfully
depicts the rich colours and tonal atmosphere of the subject. |
|
It has been suggested, but remains uncertain if Max Jacob (1876 - 1944), the artist, poet, and art critic who wrote articles under the pseudonym, 'Leon David' is the same artist who crated this original aquatint. Max Jacob was one of the leaders of the avant-garde art movement in Paris and played an important role in teaching at the Academy of Toulouse and the Julian Academy. As a visual artist, Max Jacob is listed as painter, watercolour artist and illustrator and is said to have influenced artists in the graphic arts, however, there appear to be no evidence that can confirm his own creations in the medium of aquatinting or etching. |
