Honore Daumier's original lithograph, Monsieur...Monsieur ...V La vot Mouchoir... belongs to a series. of sixty lithographs entitled, Moeurs Conjugales (Marriage Customs), created and published by Le Charivari, Paris from 1839 through 1842. As this title indicates the prime subject matter of these Honore Daumier lithographs was the trials and tribulations of married life. Monsieur...Monsieur ...V La vot Mouchoir...Madame y a mis de L'eau de Cologne et elle Vous Recommande Bien une fois au Corps de Garde de Demander une Chauffrette! was the forty-seventh lithograph from the set. It depicts a middle aged officer returning to his regiment on a cold, rainy night. This impression is singed with Daumier's monograme "h. D." within the stone, lower left. It is a 'Third State', hand-colored 'Sur Blanc' impression published by Le Charivari in 1842, containing the plate number, '47', and the series,"Moeurs Conjugales" in the upper margin. It also contains the publication and printer's details, "Chez Bauger R. du Croissant, 16", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie.", and the full title in French below the image. This original lithograph is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the greatest French Satirical master, Honore Daumier. |

Note: | Honore Daumier: France's greatest satirical artist of all time should require very little introduction. Along with England's Hogarth and Spain's Goya, Honore Daumier's wonderful imagery of human foibles and failings is unsurpassed. A master painter and sculptor, Daumier will always be best remembered for his incredible lithographs, particularly those published by Le Charivari from the early 1830's onwards. This was the Golden Age of French satirical art. Such praiseworthy masters as Gavarni, Bourdet and Grandville devoted themselves almost exclusively to this vital artform. Yet nobody, either in that era or since then, has managed to blend brilliant artistry, biting social commentary and pure humour at Daumier's high level. Daumier's lithographs have claimed a huge influence for more than one hundred and fifty years. As one can see from this original lithograph entitled Monsieur...Monsieur ... V La vot Mouchoir..., Daumier's manner of capturing expression and emotion has perhaps never been equaled. |
Beginning around this time, a number of Honore Daumier's lithographs were published not only within the regular journal, Le Charivari -- on the characteristic thin wove paper with the text on the verso -- but in a small edition of 'sur blanc' impressions. These were printed individually on superior white wove paper (without the text on the verso). Some of these from the more popular series were also hand-colored at the time of publication. This is the case with this original Honore Daumier lithograph. Because of the finer paper and printing methods, 'sur blanc' impressions are worth considerably more than those which appeared within the actual journal. | |
This orginal lithograph belongs to a series. of sixty lithographs entitled, Moeurs Conjugales, created and published in Paris from 1839 through 1842. This original lithograph is a hand-colored 'Sur Blanc' impression, 3rd State as published by Le Charivari in 1842. It is signed with Daumier's monograme"h. D." within the stone, lower left. It contains the plate number, '47', and the series,"Moeurs Conjugales" in the upper margin, and the publication and printer's details, "Chez Bauger R. du Croissant, 16", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie.", as well as the full title in French below the image. The Heidelberg University Library includes an impression of this orignal lithograph (text on vedrsto), in its permanent collection Le Charivari, 1842 (No. 86-120), #459, from the Onzieme Anne.- No. 117 issue dated Wednesday 27, April 1842. As this title indicates the prime subject matter of these Honore Daumier lithographs was the trials and tribulations of married life. Monsieur...Monsieur ...V La vot Mouchoir...Madame y a mis de L'eau de Cologne et elle Vous Recommande Bien une fois au Corps de Garde de Demander une Chauffrette! was the forty-seventh lithograph from the set and depicts a middle aged officer returning to his regiment on a cold, rainy night. On an errand from his wife the maid has just caught up with him and speaks; "Monsieur...Monsieur...Here is your handkerchief. Madame has put some perfume on it and recommends that once you return to the barracks you get yourself a footwarmer." |
