Note |
"Interior of the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, Leadenhall, in
the Parish of St. Peter, upon Cornhill, London" is a fine example of early
nineteenth century British architectural engraving. It was engraved by Thomas Dale based
upon a design created by the British artist, Henry Mayle Whichelo, Senior. Whichelo contributed several drawings
for the plates published by Robert Wilkinson for the Londina Illustrata, Graphic and Historical Memorials (1808-1825) in two volumes. The Londina
Illustrata consisted of two hundred and six engravings including engraved titles as well as several double plates.
These engravings depicted graphic and historical illustrations, memorials of ancient appearances of the metropolis;
and of the Religious Foundations, monasteries, Churches, Chapels, Meeting-houses, Schools, Charitable Foundations,
Palaces, Halls, Court Processions, Places of early Amusements and Modern Present Theatres. A few of Thomas Dale's
other contributions to this publication also include, View of the Skin-Market, Leadenhall (1825), View in Cuper's Gardens,
Lambeth (1825), West View of Blackwell Hall, King Street Cheapside (1820), A View of Part of the Ancient Remains
of London Wall (1819), and other important and historical views. |

This original Thomas Dale engraving gives us an
accurate view of the interior of an old London chapel, and, from the missing timber above the window,
a chapel in need of restoration. Workmen are thus busy on the ground floor.
We view a wealth of period tools and various methods of construction are
chronicled. Thus this original engraving is most valuable in educating
us as to how such work was carried out in the early nineteenth century.
Beautiful artistic touches are also present, particularly in the lower
right corner, where one worker (probably the foreman) has momentarily stopped
his activities to drink a large mug of ale. The comfortable cat behind
him appears to be enjoying its role of a spectator. The British Museum includes an impression
of this original engraving in its permanent collection. Registration Number,
1880,0911.677. Another impression is held in the permanent collection of the Yale Center for British art.
Accession Number, B1997.1.2. |

The first three decades of the nineteenth century marks
a golden age for British architectural and topographical art. At this
time a number of very skilled artists devoted their careers to accurate
depictions of buildings and city streets. Within this oeuvre printmaking
assumed a vital role and such great publishing houses as Ackermann, Robert Wilkinson
and others prospered. |
