Note: | Arch Dale: Students of Canadian political cartooning will readily recognize the name of Arch Dale. He was among the front ranks of Canadian caricaturists during the decades of the Great Depression and of the 1940's. After working for several years as a cartoonist for 'The Glasgow News', Arch Dale moved to the province of Saskatchewan in 1905. Two years later he arrived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and began selling his drawings to the 'Winnipeg Free Press'. He also created a popular comic strip called, 'The Doo-Dads', which he took to Chicago and syndicated in more than fifty American newspapers. Arch Dale remained in Chicago for a number of years, but eventually grew dissatisfied with that city and returned to Winnipeg, becoming a permanent member of the staff of the 'Free Press' in 1927. He remained with this publication until his retirement in 1954. |
During these years the 'Winnipeg Free Press' was a most important voice for Western Canada and it was Arch Dale and his political cartoons which proved to be its most popular and enduring feature. Bearing no political preferences, Arch Dale brilliantly satirized all political parties and institutions, particularly the ruling Conservatives whom he often portrayed as pompous and dogmatic men sporting walrus-like mustaches. Thus, in "The Golfer", the presence of such a mustache, may indicate a portrayal of a leading Tory.
During the depression and its aftermath, Arch Dale's famous cartoons drew the ire of many prominent politicians in Canada. It is written that Premier Aberhart of Alberta referred to him as, "a common drunkard" -- Dale had a fondness for the bottle. Dale replied; "I don’t mind being called a drunkard, but he used the word, 'common'".
