F. W. Curzon & the Toronto Lithographic Company

F. W. Curzon and Toronto Lithographic Company - Battle of Fish Creek

Battle of Fish Creek (The Louis Riel Rebellion)

F. W. Curzon's "Battle of Fish Creek": In 1885 the Toronto Lithographic Company printed three, large colour lithographs of the major battles that took place during the Louis Riel Rebellion. These were the "Battle of Fish Creek", the "Battle of Duck Lake" and the "Battle of Batoche". These original lithographs are remarkable because they were created within weeks of the actual fighting and depict the battles with surprising accuracy. They were each based upon designs by F. W. Curzon, who was a special war artist for "The Illustrated London News". He travelled with General Middleton's forces from the beginning of the Rebellion to the end. This original lithograph is printed upon 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published in Toronto in 1885.

Note: On April 24, 1885 the Canadian forces under the command of Major General Frederick Middleton were ambushed by the Metis forces of Gabriel Dumont. Manpower was decidedly in favour of Middleton (900 to 200), yet the Metis managed, after the initial surprise attack, to protect themselves from enemy fire by positioning themselves in the gullies and ravines on the opposite side of the creek. After taking a number of casualties, Middleton ordered a retreat.
The Louis Riel Rebellion was a pivotal event in nineteenth century Canadian history. In the major urban centres of the East news of each battle and skirmish was awaited anxiously. Two weekly journals -- the Canadian Illustrated News and The Illustrated War News -- covered the Rebellion extensively, and supplied its reader's with quickly made wood engravings depicting the conflicts. These in turn were reproduced by international journals, such as, Harper's and the Illustrated London News. By both American and European standards the actual battles were not large enough to command the attention the rebellion received, but even at this point it was apparent that racial and political elements of long standing had brought the hostilities to the forefront and might easily spread across the Dominion. For the first time, English Canada was seriously threatened by the widespread discontent of the French Canadien, Aboriginal and Metis communities. In the end the Riel Rebellion was squashed, but its unresolved problems are still very much apparent to this day.
In 1885 the Toronto Lithographic Company printed three, large, colour lithographs of the major battles. These were the "Battle of Fish Creek", the "Battle of Duck Lake" and the "Battle of Batoche". These images are remarkable because they were created within weeks of the actual fighting and depict the battles with surprising accuracy. They were each based upon designs by F. W.   Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of these historically important lithographs have suffered extensive damage over the years through tearing, water staining or destructive framing techniques. To find any of these scarce lithographs, such as this impression of the "Battle of Fish Creek", in such a fine state of preservation is next to impossible.
