He graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in science and architecture in 1926. Shortly thereafter he joined the Cleveland architectural firm of C. B. Rowley & Associates in Cleveland. Beginning in 1930, Cunningham regularly participated in the annual art shows at the Cleveland Museum of Art. National recognition followed in the later 1930's when his art was included in shows at the prestigious Whitney Museum, New York, (1937) and at the New York World's Fair (1939). In 1946, Cunningham instituted his own architectural firm and later served as President of the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. |
As an artist, Phelps Cunningham became best known for his meticulous linocuts, wood engravings and woodcuts of scenes of the rural Midwest. Some of his finest original prints, however, were created during his 1929 to 1932 travels through France. Grimaldi Castle, Gagnes, France is a remarkable work of art from these travels. | |
