Note: | Domenico Cunego: A major eighteenth century Italian engraver and etcher, Domenico Cunego was instructed in painting by Ferrari but soon after devoted himself entirely to the art of engraving. He quickly gained a large reputation for his engravings after the works of the Italian masters and as a result he was commissioned by the Royal Family of Prussia to engrave their portraits and was also invited to London to engrave plates for the Boydell Gallery. During his highly successful career, Cunego engraved large plates after the art of Raphael, Titian, 'Tiziano Vecellio' (c. 1490-1576), Agostino Carracci (1557-1602), Raphael Mengs (1728-1779), Giovanni Francesco Barbieri 'Guercino' (1591-1666) and many others. Among Cunego's pupils were his two sons, Guiseppe and Luigi, who both became accomplished engravers. |
Domenico Cunego's art is notable for its rich contrasts and textures. He was one of the first engravers to combine both etching and engraving to achieve distinctive tonal values. These qualities are apparent in many of his finest plates, such as this original engraving entitled, Filia Roberti Strozzi Noblis Florentini. It is based upon Titian's painting created in 1542. The engraving depicts a portrait of the young daughter of the Nobleman, Roberti Strozzi and his wife Maddalena de'Medici, Clarice Strozzi, (1540 - 1581), with her little dog.

Titian (Pieve di Cadore, c. 1487 – Venice, 1576): The greatest master of the Venetian School, Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) studied and trained under Giovanni Bellini, in Venice. As early as 1507, Titian was receiving government commissions and working alongside such artists as Giorgione. In 1516 he succeeded Bellini as the Official Painter to the Doge of Venice. By 1530 Titian’s clientele included most of the rulers and nobility of all of Catholic Europe. He was particularly patronised by Emperor Charles V and his son, Philip II, during the following years. In the 1540’s Titian assumed the unofficial role of portraitist to the Farnese, the family of Pope Paul the Third. As well such powerful figures as the Dukes of Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino continually vied for his portraits and mythological and religious scenes. As a result Titian became perhaps the most politically powerful artist of the Italian Renaissance. Titian’s influence has proved to be vast. Such masters as Poussin, Velazquez and Rubens have revered his art. Titian's original painting, entitled, "Filia Roberti Strozzi Noblis Florentini" was created in 1542.
