Note:	Issac Robert Cruikshank 'Robert Cruikshank': The elder brother of the famous satirical artist, George Cruikshank (1792-1878), Robert Cruikshank first studied art under his father, Isaac Cruikshank (1762-1811). During the Napoleonic wars he served in the merchant navy and then turned to his art after the final victory at Waterloo. For the following twenty years Robert’s work in etching and illustration paralleled that of his brother. In fact he often collaborated with George Cruikshank and together the brothers illustrated such books as Pierce’s, Life in London.
	In 1835, the London publisher, Thomas McLean, acquired a number of the most popular plates of both George and Robert Cruikshank and reprinted them with his address for a second and final edition which was titled, Cruikshankiana. This original etching hails from this edition.

The statements for each are provided below: 1) The Vigilant Houskeeper. Every one must acknowledge the value of a good Hosekeeper & I flatter myself I am that personage. I never allow a Butcher, Baker, Grocer, Tea Man etc. to over charge my worthy master & mistress or put down in ye Bill more than they served, nor I never speaks ill of my Lord if he happens by chance to look into my concerns, because I knows he is sure to be satisfied with them, as I can make him believe anything, he is so Easy, I never does willify any Tradesman's articles because he don't think me worthy of consideration - no I knows better how to keep up my own Dignity. 2) The Amiable Lady's Maid. I am my Lady's own pure unspotted maid & never think of dressing myself in her Clothes when she is absent, or of persuading her does not look well in an article I may have taken a fancy to, or of pressing her Tradesmen to give me large poundage upon pain of losing my Lady's favour, no - not I am too independent to go behind the Bush with counter-jumpers. My place is uppermost & uppermost I'll be. 3) The Faithful Butler Egad I am one of the best gentlemen's gentlemen in Europe. I does my duty to my Master in style not a Himposition does I allow my tradesmen to practise on him for a petty fee. Nor do I put Aquafortis on the seams of the Tailor's work, or Bootmaker's articles etc., if they don't do the thing handsome - no. I always ads right and does a friendly turn for those who be friends to me. 4) The Honest Coachman Aye, my master, I always does the fair thing with em, Coachmaker, Farrier, Corn dealer, and a host on em, I never scratches the varnish, burns the leather, drives a nail in the horse's foot, or spoil the corn because I don't get a good feeling out of it. Acts honest to my Master and never forgets the Tradesmen who remembers Jarvey. Yea-a-ap!! That's the way we corne it, my tiny ones.

Condition:	Printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and large, full margins as published by Thomas McLean in 1835. Containing several slight, restored tears far away from the actual plate-mark as well as very minor foxing in the outer margins, else in good condition throughout.
