George Cruikshank - Le Retour de Paris or the Niece Presented to her Relatives

Le Retour de Paris, or, the Niece Presented to her Relatives by her French Governess

George Cruikshank’s original etching, "Le Retour de Paris, or, the Niece Presented to her Relatives by her French Governess", was initially published in 1816. This original impression, bearing the British publisher’s address of Thomas McLean, hails from the second and final edition of 1835. The designer of "Le Retour de Paris" (The Return from Paris) is presently not known. The ‘E H L’ monogram may possibly belong to Victorian England’s most famous animal painter, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873). Simon Houfe writes that Landseer often created caricatures in either wash or brown ink, particularly while staying with friends in country houses. A potential stumbling block for this attribution is, of course, the date. Edwin Henry Landseer was born in 1802 which means he would have been fourteen or fifteen when he drew this caricature. At the age of fourteen, however, Landseer had already been admitted to the Royal Academy schools and had exhibited at the Royal Academy (1815).

Title: Le Retour de Paris, or, the Niece Presented to her Relatives by her French Governess
Engraver: Cruikshank, George (London, 1792 - 1878)
Designer: Monogramme 'E H L' (Sir Edwin Henry Landseer?)
Date: 1816 (Second and Final Edition, 1835)
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Thomas McLean, Haymarket
Note: George Cruikshank: The name of George Cruikshank deserves to stand beside those of William Hogarth, Thomas Rowlandson and James Gillray as representing the greatest satirical artists from the Golden Age of this art form. As a child he learned etching techniques from his father, Isaac Cruikshank (1762-1811), a fine satirical artist in his own right. George Cruikshank published his first etching at the age of twelve. During the second and third decades of the nineteenth century he created works of art which equaled the etchings of Gillray and Rowlandson in their technical abilities, but which perhaps surpassed either of these masters in their pure and wonderful humour. More than any other artist of satire, George Cruikshank was at his best when the target was -- as in this fine example -- culture, fashion and social life. George Cruikshank also worked in collaboration with his brother, Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856), another fine caricaturist and satirical artist, as well as other satirical designers, such as Captain Frederick Marryat.
As the conservative Victorian era began (1837) most forms of satirical art grew to be unfashionable. George Cruikshank thus turned his talents to the illustrated book. Some of the greatest volumes from these later times, including Dickens’s "Oliver Twist", bear testimony to the lifelong creativity of his art.
In 1835 the London publisher, Thomas McLean, acquired a number of the most popular plates of both George and Robert Cruikshank and reprinted them with his address for a second and final edition which was titled, "Cruikshankiana". This original etching, "Le Retour de Paris, or, the Niece Presented to her Relatives by her French Governess" hails from this edition.
Edwin Henry Landseer: The designer of "Le Retour de Paris" (The Return from Paris) is presently not known.

The commentary for George Cruikshank’s original etching, Le Retour de Paris, or, the Niece Presented to her Relatives by her French Governess is provided below. To the right, the Governess, the returning niece and the man servant all speak in French. A rough translation is provided.

The Niece (to the extreme left): "Well-a-day Aunt! what Monstrosities are these?

The Aunt: In the name of all that’s Christian speak & say what you are & where you come from, your Hottenpots,__ Aye don’t talk to me of Turpuschore & Green Owls or any of your hocus pocus nonsense. Speak plain English you Mountebanks do -- or Ill make you answer before my Husband, one of his Majesty’s justices -- I will.

The Governess (in French): Madame I have the honour to present your Niece, she is totally French, speaks our language flawlessly, sings like an angel, dances like the Terpsichore, she even eats frogs.

(The Returning Niece): My dear Aunt, my Uncle, my Sister, don’t you recognize your little Emily?

(The Man Servant): Oh Devil! as I tremble when I look upon the threatening visage of the big Monsieur Bull, and when I hear the barbaric voice of this Grenadier I am ready to die -- but I will conceal myself as much as I can behind Madame."

Raisonne: Albert M. Cohn, George Cruikshank: "A Catalogue Raisonne", London, Bookman’s Journal, 1924 (Reprinted, 1971).
