George Cruikshank's Humming-Birds -- or a Dandy Trio: During the early 1800's both Robert and George Cruikshank took aim in their art at the 'Dandy', the term used for the excessively fashionable, clothes conscious young men of the Georgian era. In Humming-birds, or a Dandy Trio, George Cruikshank portrays three young men singing and playing melodies to such heart-felt scores as "The Lovesick Swain set to Music". The two men singing in the foreground try their best, however, the man at the mirror seems more absorbed with the beauty of his own visage. The two titled paintings on the wall -- 'Vacuna' and 'Narcissus' -- reveal much, as does the agonized expression of the ridiculous French poodle. Dandies making music is therefore an affront to both the eye and the ear. 'Humming-Birds -- or a Dandy Trio' is an original etching by George Cruikshank and published initially in c. 1820. This impression was published by Thomas McLean for the second and final edition, 1835. |

Note: | George Cruikshank: The name of George Cruikshank deserves to stand beside those of William Hogarth, Thomas Rowlandson and James Gillray as representing the greatest satirical artists from the Golden Age of this art form. As a child he learned etching techniques from his father, Isaac Cruikshank (1762-1811), a fine satirical artist in his own right. George Cruikshank published his first etching at the age of twelve. During the second and third decades of the nineteenth century he created works of art which equaled the etchings of Gillray and Rowlandson in their technical abilities, but which perhaps surpassed either of these masters in their pure and wonderful humour. More than any other artist of satire, George Cruikshank was at his best when the target was -- as in this fine example -- culture, fashion and society. George Cruikshank also worked in collaboration with his brother, Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856), another fine caricaturist and satirical artist. |
As the conservative Victorian era wore on great satirical art grew to be unfashionable. George Cruikshank thus turned his talents to the illustrated book. Some of the greatest volumes from these times, including Dickens's Oliver Twist, bear testimony to the lifelong creativity of his art.
In 1835 the London publisher, Thomas McLean, acquired a number of the most popular plates of both George and Robert Cruikshank and reprinted them with his address for a second and final edition. This original etching entitled, Humming-Birds -- or a Dandy Trio hails from this edition.
