Note: The American poster began from modest black and white experiments in the 1870's and reached its artistic peak by the turn of the century. American companies were quick to recognize the potential of the original chromolithographic poster and its artistic technique. Advertisers regularly allied their products to appealing visual imagery and in all the following decades they were creating the most expensive and most creative art, of which the large poster was the ultimate example. Once photography set in, that was the end of the original chromolithographic poster due to the fact that it was too expensive to continue paying the artists to create them and photography as a means of mass production was infinitely cheaper. Unfortunately, because of both their size and manner in which they were handled very few can be found in good condition. The few that survived the mishaps of time offer the collector a rare and important combination of history, artistry and pure entertainment.
Size: 38 3/4 X 26 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Framed and Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed on nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in 1895 by the Courier Company. As with all large posters from this important era the work had been folded and the paper cracked along various crease marks, with slight chipping and paper loss to the outside margins. A trained archivist who strengthened all the weak areas with complete acid-free materials expertly restored the entire poster. The result is that this sensational and scarce original poster can now be fully appreciated. Capt. Webb's Wonderful Seal and Sea Lion Band is a magnificent, original example of the golden era of the American poster.
