Francisco Corzas: A leading Mexican painter
and printmaker of the latter twentieth century, Francisco Corzas began
his art studies in Mexico City at the age of fourteen. Several years later
he was admitted into the art school, La Esmeralda, where he was instructed
by such established artists as Maria Izquierdo, Juan Soriano, Carlos Orozco
Romero and Augustin Lazo. In 1955 Corzas moved to Rome where he completed
his studies at the Accademia di San Giacomo and the Accademia di Bella
Arti e Liceo Artistico. Francisco Corzas remained in Rome for the following
five years. Initially he faced great economic hardship. His fortune changed
dramatically in 1960 when his art was awarded the silver medal at the Via
Margutta International Art Fair. After briefly touring other European countries
the artist returned to Mexico City. |
|
In Mexico City, Corzas established himself as a leading Expressionist
artist. During the following years his art was included in international
exhibitions in New York, Rome, Oslo and San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the 1970's
his lithographs were commissioned by major publishers in Paris, Rome and
New York. Francisco Corzas was a full member of Los Interioristas, an arts
association dedicated to the defense of humanistic values. |
|
The relationship of passion and sexuality to art and the artist is a
primary element of Francisco Corzas's work. With its haunting imagery, Easel (Artist and Model) explores
such concerns. Easel dates from 1969 when the artist was living and working
in New York City. At this time Corzas was commissioned by Lublin Press to create a small number of original lithographs. |
