Note:	Edward Henry Corbould 'Edward Corbould': A well regarded painter, sculptor and illustrator, Edward Henry Corbould (1815 - 1905) studied at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1851, Edward Corbould accepted the post of drawing master to the family of Queen Victoria and retained that position until 1872.
	Day & Haghe, London: The most famous early Victorian firm of lithographic printing was by created William Day (1797 - 1845) and Louis Haghe (1806 - 1895) in London in 1829. Throughout their initial years, Day and Haghe printed lithographs dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as hunting scenes, topographical views and genre depictions. Their lithographs were so meticulously conceived and technically advanced that in 1838, Day and Haghe were appointed 'Lithographers to the Queen'. After William's death in 1845, the firm became known as 'Day & Son' and in the mid-Victorian era it led the way as a pioneer of the recently developed medium of the lithograph printed in colours. Such later series as, Art Treasures of the United Kingdom (1858) and Industrial Arts at the Great Exhibition (1853) stand as fine examples of their skills in this area.
	The Eglinton Tournament represents the most ambitious project of Day & Haghe's early years. In the summer of 1839, inspired by the contemporary resurgence of interest in medieval pageantry, the 13th Earl of Eglinton staged a lavish tournament at his castle in Ayrshire, Scotland. Invited participants impersonated famous knights of the past, who jousted for the favours of the "Queen of Beauty'. The festivities surrounding this event drew great attention and several months later, Day & Haghe printed a series of twelve large lithographs to commemorate it. Published in London (Pall Mall) by Hodgson & Graves, each lithograph was designed and drawn upon the stone by Edward Henry Corbould 'Edward Corbould'.
	The printing techniques for these large, early lithographs are quite impressive. One is first struck with the fantastic details and tones. Furthermore, each lithograph required a separate printing with a tint stone of china white. The fine white lines thus stand in relief upon the surface of the composition.

Condition:	Printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and with full, large margins as published in London on November 30th, 1839. A fine initial impression and in excellent condition throughout. This original lithograph of The Joust Between The Lord of The Tournament and The Knight of The Red Rose represents a scarce and important example of early Victorian art. Examples from this famous set are very sought after, particularly in such excellent condition.
