Francisco Copello Norero: Famous as a printmaker, painter, master printer,
choreographer and mime, Francisco Copello is one of Chile's most renowned
artists and performers. He studied painting and graphic art at the Academia
di Belli Arti, Florence, Italy, from 1962 to 1966. Shortly thereafter
he left for New York to complete his printmaking studies at the Pratt
Graphic Center under Roberto Delamonica, Luis Camnitzer. In 1969, with the help
of his friend and fellow artist, Fernando Torm-Toha, Francisco Copello
founded the alternative New York Art workshop, 'Studio F.' / 'Taller 69', at 155 Chambers Street.
There, they experimented with printmaking, collage, modern music and body-art until 1972. All of Copello's original prints
from this time were printed and published at this famous New York Art workshop. As a master
printer, Francisco Copello printed original graphics for such famous artists as Sandro Chia, Rainer Fetting,
Adolph Gottlieb, David Hockney, Keith Haring, Paul Jenkins and Rachel Friedberg and others. This
artist can also be found listed as the Chilean visual and graphic artist, Frank Copello. |

In 1971 and 1972, Francisco Copello also pursued his career in
theatre. At the same time his graphic art was the subject of exhibitions in Washington,
New York and Mexico City. Amongst many of his awards, he also received a grant from the New York
Arts Council and was awarded the Nicolaus Copernicus prize. |

In 1974, Francisco Copello returned to live in Italy.
There he became a leading influence upon avant-guarde art and visual
performances. In 1986, he accepted a founding role in the formation of
the American Mime Theatre of New York (under the direction of Paul Curtis),
and remained with the Company until 1995. In 1996 Francisco Copello
returned to live and work in his native Santiago where he worked at the Faculties
of both Visual Arts and Theatre at the University of Chile. The master
printer, graphic artist, painter and performer, Francisco Copello Norero died in Santiago Chile in 2006. |

Francisco Copello's one man exhibitions include the Instituto Chileno Italiano,
Santiago de Chile (1969), Instituto Chileno Norteamericano, Santiago de Chile (1969), Galeria Pecanins,
Mexico City (1970), Studio F., New York, (1971), Instituto Chileno Frances, Valpraraiso, Chile, (1973). And
a selection of his group exhibitions were held at the Galleria delle arti e del Disigno, (1966),
Pratt Graphics Art Center, New York (1969 & 1972), Taller 99 Lima Peru (1969), Bienal de Viena, Austria (1972),
Bienal de Bradford, England (1976) and many other important international and national solo and group exhibitions have
been held throughout his career. Today the art of Francisco Copello Norero is found in many major international collections, including the Brooklyn Museum and the
Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), the New York Public Library, the Bibliotheque National, Paris, Museo de arte Contemporaraneo,
Sao Paulo, Brazil, the Art Museum of the Americas, and other private, corportate and public institutions. This composition is
a fine, original example of the graphic art created by the Chilean artist, Francisco Copello. |

From the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory
number, 'T-536', on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the
commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972, he also opened
the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his
own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important
exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American
and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni, Birgit
Skiold and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts
community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright, Francisco Copello and Hans Burkhardt. Their
original prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery
until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death. |

Printed upon hand-made 'German Etch' paper and with
full margins as printed in New York in 1971by the artist in the limited
and signed edition of 100 impressions. Signed and numbered, '20/100'
by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. A fine full colour impression
and in excellent condition throughout. Untitled Composition (Cubes) represents
a prime, original example of the famous art of Francisco Copello Norero. |
