Robert Cooper: A London based engraver of portraits
and figure studies after the works of various British artists, Robert
Cooper contributed engravings to Lodge's Portraits as well as illustrating
several of Scot's novels. Yet Robert Cooper would probably have passed
into obscurity if not for the fine series of over twenty actor and actress
portrayals he created between 1820 and 1823. Mr. Gattie belongs
to this set. These depictions are important as they are among the first
such works of art in English theatre history. Such fine engravings as
this example helped the actor to rise from his humble surroundings to
become a celebrity, a position he enjoys to this day. |
|
In these original engravings Cooper surpassed by far any
other work executed in his hand. Each of his engravings portray the most
famous actors and actresses of the era, all represented in their most
famous dramatic roles. Gattie, for example, is shown in his role of Monsieur
Morbleu, from the play, Monsieur Tonson. These works of art were usually
hand-coloured at the time of publication and often sold in the theatres
in which the actor was performing. |
