Note: |
John Coney: An important English architectural draughtsman
and etcher of the early nineteenth century, John Coney was first apprenticed
to an architect but chose to follow a career in the arts. Mainly self-taught,
Coney created and sold pencil drawings of the interior of Westminster
Abbey and other Gothic buildings from the age of fifteen. In 1815 he published
his first work, a series of eight views of Warwick Castle, drawn and etched
by himself. |
|
These early works brought him to the attention of the artist
and illustrator, James Duffield Harding (1797-1863), who in 1815 employed
John Coney to work upon a large series of etchings depicting exterior and interior
views of the cathedrals and abbey churches of England. This massive project
occupied John Coney for the following fourteen years and the completed etchings
and engravings were published in 1829 under the title of Views of English
Abbeys and Cathedrals. This large and impressive graphite drawing
of Buildwas Abbey in Shropshire was no doubt created in relation to this
series. |
|
After completing his views of English Abbeys John Coney
was sought after by numerous London publishers to draw and engrave views
throughout Europe. In 1829 he commenced his Engravings of Ancient Cathedrals,
Hotels de Ville and other Public Buildings of Celebrity in France, Holland,
Germany and Italy and in 1831 he began work upon a set entitled, Architectural
Beauties of Continental Europe. As well, John Coney was commissioned to
draw and engrave individual views in both Rome and Milan. |
|
Throughout the early nineteenth century and afterwards John
Coney was regarded as a leading architectural artist. G. C. Williamson
writes, "His (Coney's) drawings exhibit all the minutest details without
the appearance of labour, yet with a neatness that is truly surprising."
* Today most of John Coney's original drawings and watercolours are held
by major museums. Both the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British
Museum, London, include selections of his original art in their collections. |

Condition: |
Drawn upon early nineteenth century wove paper bearing the
'Whatman Turkey Mill 1821' watermark and with full margins. Signed, dated
and titled by John Coney in pencil along the top central margin. The drawing
was received on its original and acidic black backing board and was glued
on the verso around all four edges. Every conservationist is aware that
the acidity of early nineteenth century papers and matting materials is
among the worst. This drawing was thus extensively foxed, stained and
browned. For restoration, the drawing was carefully removed from its black
board backing (without any loss of paper) and then bathed in archival
solutions and cleaned with distilled water. The browning and staining
was completely eradicated and the foxing -- while still apparent (particularly
in the sky) -- was greatly diminished. This original drawing is thus probably
in better condition now than it was one hundred and fifty years ago. Buildwas
Abbey, Shropshire, from the N. E thus represents both a premier work
of historic significance and a prime example of the architectural art
of John Coney. |
