Artist: Colman, Samuel (Portland, Maine, 1832 - New York City, 1920)
Date: 1885
Medium: Original Etching with Plate Tone
Note: Samuel Colman: A leading American nineteenth century etcher and painter of landscapes and marine subjects, Samuel Colman studied art techniques under Asher Brown Durand in New York. He also studied both etching and painting in France and Spain from 1860 to 1862. Colman was elected an Associate of the National Academy in 1860 and an Academician in 1862. He was also a founding member of the American Society of Painters in Water Colors and of the New York Etching Club. A constant traveler, Samuel Colman's etchings and paintings depict scenes in Europe, North Africa and the American West. "Entrance to Valencia" is a striking example of his European landscapes.
Samuel Colman's first etchings date from 1867. He soon, however, abandoned his experiments due to the lack of accomplished printers in America at that time. He returned to etching with the formation of the New York Etching Club in 1877 and dedicated himself to this medium for the following twenty years. Samuel Colman's etchings are known for their fine technique and effects and during this period he was considered one of the greatest etchers in the United States.
