Gustavo Cochet:
One of Argentina's finest twentieth century artists, Gustavo Cochet first studied
under Cesar Caggiano in Buenos Aires, and then went to Barcelona at the
age of seventeen to study painting and printmaking under Jose Dalmau and
Lotrenil. Four years later he had his first one man exhibition there at
Galeria Dalmau. In 1920 Gustavo Cochet moved to Paris and began regularly
exhibiting his art in that city. He then enlisted in the French army, serving
for a year. |
|
Gustavo Cochet returned to Rosario in 1928 and in 1931 his
book, Diario de un pintor, was published. In 1934 he was again in Spain,
taking an active role with the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Cochet
also became an influential member of the Federacion Anarquista Iberica
at this time. In this decade he created a series of 22 aquatints dealing
with the horrors of war, entitled, Caprichos. |
|
Because of the defeat of the Republicans in 1939, Gustavo
Cochet and his family fled to France. Several years later he returned permanently
to his native Argentina, living in Santa Fe where a large exhibition of
his art was held at the Museo Rosa Galsteo de Rodriguez. He also served
as Professor of Painting there at the Escuela de Bellas Artes. |
|
Gustavo Cochet was also a fine writer. Besides Diario
de un pintor, he authored
such books as Entre el Ilanyo y sierra (1939), and El grabado:
historia y tecnica (1943). Today a large collection of Cochet's art is housed in the Museo Gustavo
Cochet, Funes, Argentina. |

Une Saison en Enfer hails from a limited edition portfolio
entitled Arthur Rimbaud: Oeuvres completes published by Viau in Buenos
Aires in 1943. The first few opening lines read;
Une Saison en Enfer
"Jadis, si je me souviens bien, ma vie etait
un festin ou s'ouvraient tous les coeurs, ou rous les vins coulaient.
Un soir, J'ai assis la Beaute sur mes Genoux. -- Et je l'ai injuriee.
Je me suis arme contre la justice.
Je me suis enfui. O sorcieres, o misere, o haine, c'est a vous que mon
treswor a ete confie!
snag. Le malheur a ete mon dieu. Je me suis allonge dans la boue. Je me
suis seche a l‘air du crime. Et j‘ai joue de bons tours a la
folie" *Arthur Rimbaud ...." *Arthur Rimbaud
