Richard Cobbold's lithograph, The Spider's Web is a symbol of man's enslavement of women in matrimony. The imagery in the background of this original lithograph further illustrates the perils of women's fate: a man with a bouquet stands in front of the castle -- the woman flees and may consequently lose her life on the steep cliff. The Spider's Web was created and published by the British artist and author, the Reverend Richard Cobbold in 1827 for a collection of poetry entitled, Truth, Love Virtue. Many of these poems concentrate upon love and, in particular, love and women's vulnerability. He contributed an original lithograph to illustrate each of his poems. All are drawn in the pen manner of early English lithography. The poem for this lithograph is provided below: |

Note: | Richard Cobbold: An amateur writer, painter, etcher and lithographer, Richard Cobbold was educated at Cambridge. He then became Reverend of St. Mary Le Tower, Ipswich and held that post until 1828 when he was appointed Rector of Wortham, Suffolk. He remained there for the following forty-nine years. |
In Wortham, Richard Cobbold built the rectory, set up the village's first schools and was a constant provider to the poor and needy. Reverend Cobbold was also very active in the arts. He regularly drew and painted the local inhabitants and their dwellings and wrote four volumes dealing with the lives of his parishioners which are now in the collection of the Suffolk Record Office. As well he wrote several popular historical novels, the best known being The History of Margaret Catchpole. This was a loosely based biography on Margaret Catchpole (1762-1841), a nurse in the Cobbold family in the late 18th century. She ran away with a smuggler and stole her former employee's horse. She was sentenced to death for this crime but managed to escape prison. When caught again, she was sentenced to life transportation (banishment) and spent her remaining years in Australia as both a housekeeper and nurse. Richard Cobbold's successful novel of Catchpole's life became a sort of popular Victorian metaphor for the 'fallen woman'. In 1845 Cobbold etched a portrait of Margaret Catchpole. The National Portrait Gallery, London, includes an impression in its permanent collection. | |
