An original etching by Joseph Clark, Hagar and Ishmael is based upon Clark's painting of the same title which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1860. Famous throughout his long career for his depictions of childhood, Hagar and Ishmael shows his talents in the field of religious art. When the etching was published in 1862 it was accompanied by the poem, Hagar and Ishmael, by Mary Tighe. The opening stanza is quoted below. "Injured, hopeless, faint and weary, This original etching is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. It bears the artist's name, "'J. Clark" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate. Hagar and Ishmael is a fine, original example of the 19th century etched art created by the British artist, Joseph Clark. |

Note: | Joseph Clark : A Victorian era and early twentieth century painter and etcher, Joseph Clark studied art techniques at J. M. Leigh's School and at the Royal Academy Schools. Clark began exhibiting his art at the Royal Academy in 1857 and was an annual contributor there and at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours until 1925 -- thus constituting a lengthy exhibition history of sixty-eight years. Many of his paintings were very popular and were thus engraved by other hands. Joseph Clark, himself created several original etchings based upon his canvases. These included, Hagar and Ishmael and The Sick Child. |
The art of Joseph Clark was also exhibited in the United States. In 1876 he received both and award and a medal from the city of Philadelphia. Joseph Clark was a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils (ROI). Today his art will be found in such major British collections as The Athenaeum, the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum. | |
Joseph Clark was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, Matthew James Lawless, Walter Severn, Henry Stacy Marks, Frederick Smallfield, William Gale, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and the above artists all contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862. Clark produced two original etchings for the publication, Hagar and Ishmael and The Village Grandame. | |

Mary Tighe (1772-1810): Born in Dublin, Ireland, Mary Tighe, daughter of William Blachford, is also known as Mrs. Henry Tighe. A writer of mostly sonnets and poetry of the British Romantic period. Mary Tighe's first published work was the six-canto allegorical poem in Spenserian stanzas entitled, "Psyche; or, the Legend of Love", along with some of her shorter poems published in a small edition by Carpenter in 1805. Although her work was not well known to the public during her life, due to its lack of publication, it was indubitably acknowledged after her death. Mary Tighe died in Wicklow, Ireland, at the age of thirty eight in 1810. As a tribute to Mary Tighe, the author and poet, Felicia Hemans's wrote, "The Grave of a Poetess". Other works written by Mary Tighe include, "Selma" an unpublished novel, "The Lily", "To My Mother", "Forget me not", "Sweet tear of hope, delicious tear:, and many other memorable sonnets and poems. This original etching entitled, Hagar and Ishmael illustrates a poem of the same title by Mary Tighe. In 1811, a year after her death the book entitled, "Mary: a Series of Reflections during 20 Years" was privately published, only two copies are known to exist; they are held at the Houghton Library, Harvard and the National Library of Ireland. That same year, "Psyche, with Other Poems by the late Mrs. Henry Tighe" (2nd, & 3rd editions (1811), a 4th edition (1812), & a 5th edition (1816) were printed by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, Paternoster-Row. Note: There are many very good books that contain historical and biographical information about the life and works of Mary Tighe, one to consider is the book entitled, "Mary Blachford Tighe: The Irish Psyche" by Averill Buchanan, Cambridge Scholars publishing, first published in 2011. Also, the Sheffield Hallam University, "Corvey Women Writers 1796-1834 CW3 on the web Journal" includes a detailed account of the various publications of the works of Mary Tighe. Day & Son, London: Some of the most ambitious and accomplished printmaking projects of the Victorian era were launched by the publishers, Day & Son. The firm began in the mid 1820's under the title of 'Day & Hague' and assumed its more familiar name 'Day & Son, London' in 1845. Joseph Clark's original etching entitled, Hagar and Ishmael was published by 'Day & Son, London' between 1861-62. Throughout their early years they printed and published works of art dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as, hunting scenes, genre depictions, landscape scenes and topographical views. | |

Condition: | Printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. Bearing the artist's name, "'J. Clark" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate. It also bears the plate's number "9" to the upper right corner of the margin above the image. This impression is in excellent condition throughout without a trace of staining, foxing or fading. Hagar and Ishmael represents a prime, original example of the nineteenth century art of Joseph Clark. |

The Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), was an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Members included such prominent British artists as, Sir John Everett Millais, James McNeill Whistler, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Sir John Tenniel, Charles Samuel Keene, Joseph Clark, John Wright Oakes, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite, Matthew James Lawless, Arthur James Lewis, Henry Stacy Marks, Charles Rossiter, Vincent Bury, Lord G. Fitzgerald, J. R. Clayton, John Sleigh, and Lord Gerald Fitzgerald. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, first published by Day & Son Limited, Lithographers & Publishers, London, 1862. In total, that publication contained forty-seven original etchings. The Junior Club also issued, another important publication in 1858, Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood published by E.
