Note:	Advertisers played a vital role in the new art movements. Their flowing and graceful combinations of lines and colors helped to define the Art Nouveau style of the 1890's, and their strong and forceful designs of the 1920's, promoted the Art Deco era. This can clearly seen in this original chromolithograph entitled, Swan. For further information on the medium of lithography see Aloys Senefelder, Inventor of Lithography.
	This original chromolithograph was created for a tobacco manufacturer around 1925. Until the 1930's, cigar companies flourished in the thousands throughout Europe and the United States. It was on of the richest industries in the world and companies spared no expense competing against each other through their advertising art. Their images thus represent the essence of complex printmaking techniques. Note the complex patterns of raised printings, the multiple uses of gold bronzing and the way in which, for instance, the blue representing the water is patterned in its printing. The striking design speaks for itself. Swan depicts a white swan swimming in the warm blue water off the shore of a tropical island. The main logo beneath the image reads; "Swan" and there is no further text within this label. It is a striking Art Deco image employing a delicate gold and blue design.
	Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century and into the early 20th century. However, the far less costly advances of photomechanical methods made this original and complex form of printmaking all but obsolete.
	Companies were quick to recognize the vast potential of this color medium. Beginning around 1870, advertisers regularly allied their products to appealing visual images. And in the following decades, advertisers were creating the most expensive and elaborate works, spending thousands of dollars on additional techniques. Further, expensive steps were added during the 'golden' age of the cigar label. Brass embossing dies were often engraved into the paper, lending a three dimensional quality to the label. As well, a bronze powder was applied like ink and burnished with brushes to create areas of gold. This was called, 'bronzing'. As antique artworks, advertising images, more than any other form reflect the true tastes of the times.
