Note: American Tobacco Advertising Art: When the cigar companies sought some of the finest artists to illustrate their labels, they looked to some of the leading lithographic American companies, such as the Consolidated Litho Co., The American Lithographic Co., and the George Schlegel Lithographic Company, as well as some of the top German firms which included, Gerruder Lingenberg, Gebruder Weigang and Hermann Scott. "Peter Manning, Champion Trotter, Owned by Hanover Shoe Farms" is a striking example of early American tobacco advertising art.
Peter Manning: The champion trotter, Peter Manning was the famous champion trotter owned by Hanover Shoe Farms in Lexington, Kentucky. Peter Manning, the harness racer had only two losses in his thirty four races and his world record remained unchallenged for fifteen years. The ecord time printed on this label was 1.56 3/4, dated October 4, 1922. This famous race took place at the racetrack in Llexington, Kentucky. This chromolithograph depicts a head study of the horse Peter Manning, the famous champion trotter and harness racer, a view of the race track is behind him. The entire image is enclosed in an oval-shaped frame decorated with a gilt border.
Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. From approximately 1880 to 1930, cigar manufacturers were one of the most competitive and clearly the most lucrative of the American businesses. They were quick to recognize the vast potential of creating colourful and eye-catching images to represent their product, such as this original example entitled, Champion Trotter (Peter Manning).
Because of this commercial rivalry, it was not unusual for a major cigar company to spend thousands of dollars in designing its labels. The result was that the greatest achievements in chromolithographic art were produced specifically for these companies. Further, expensive steps were added during the 'golden' age of the cigar label. Brass embossing dies were often engraved into the paper, lending a three dimensional quality to the label. As well, a bronze powder was applied like ink and burnished with brushes to create areas of gold. This was called, 'bronzing'. As antique art, advertisements such as this original example, represent the epitome of complex printmaking techniques and artistry.
Two major factors led to the downfall of this unique art. During the 1920's, the far less costly advances of photomechanical methods made this original and complex form of art all but obsolete. Secondly, the once wealthy cigar industry fell to the economic bottom of the barrel (c. 1930) due to competition from the cigarette companies and the changing economy, leaving few survivors in comparison to the thousands of companies that were destroyed and thus changing the cigar label industry forever.
