Enomoto Chikatoshi: A twentieth century Japanese painter
and printmaker, Enomoto Chikatoshi began his study of painting techniques in 1916, under
Kaburaki Kiyokata. In 1921 he graduated from the Nihonga Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Art. In
the following year Chikatoshi's first painting was accepted at the fourth Teiten,
the government sponsored exposition. His art was then annually exhibited at both the Teiten and at
the Shin-Bunten. At the end of the Second World War Enomoto Chikatoshi became a full member of the Nitten. |
|
During his career Enomoto Chikatoshi frequently exhibited
his art in both Japan and in the United States. Today examples of his art
are included in such major collections as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,
the Chicago Art Institute and the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art. |
|
In his original woodcuts and paintings, Enomoto Chikatoshi dedicated
his work to the traditional Japanese genre of 'bijin-ga' --
prints of beautiful women. His portrayals, however, are far removed from
the traditional, and often a major element of his art is the often uneasy
blending of Japanese custom with Western modernity. As well Chikatoshi's
art became famous for its unique use of coloration (particularly his shades
of reds) and for his applications of metallic pigments on the surface of
the image. Such is the case with "Young Woman Holding a Persimmon", where
small, silvery dots of mica-like substance are embedded within the paper. |
