Yoshu Chikanobu's original Japanese woodcut, "Shimousa. Iwahashi no yuki. Kiuchi Sogoro (Snow at Iwahashi in Shimousa Province. Kiuchi Sogoro departing for Edo)" belongs to one of his finest early sets entitled, Setsugekka, also spelt, 'Setsu-gekka' ('Snow, Moon and Flower'). It is printed upon nineteenth century mulberry and with full margins as published by Kobayashi Tetsujiro in 1884. Each woodcut delineates a poetic scene with a vignette image to the upper left. In this original woodcut, Chikanobu's depiction of both the snowy landscape and the mother with her three children is finely handled. Shimousa Iwahashi no yuki. Kiuchi Sogoro is a fine, original example of the 19th century art created by the Japanese artist, Yoshu Chikanobu. |

Note: | Yoslhu Chikanobu: A leading Japanese woodcut artist, Chikanobu was a student of Toyohara Kunichika. He began producing designs in the classic manner of the woodcut masters around 1870, concentrating upon both portrayals of beautiful women and scenes from Japanese legend and folklore. These woodcuts have become famous not only for their striking artistic qualities but for their technical complexities of printing. |
Later in his career, Chikanobu produced many fine triptychs dealing with both contemporary warfare and with the pleasures of the noble courts and scenes from the Noh Theatre. His later art (particularly those woodcuts relating to the theatre) are remarkable for their bold design elements and beautiful printing techniques. With the exception of Yoshitoshi, his style was perhaps more individualistic than any other Japanese woodcut artist of the times. Yoslhu Chikanobu's series entitled, Setsugekka 'Setsu-gekka' (Snow, Moon and Flowers) consisted of fifty original woodcuts created between 1884 and 1886. Shimousa Iwahashi no yuki. Kiuchi Sogoro is the twentieth woodcut from this series. | |
