| Note: | Theophile Narcisse Chauvel: One of France's major nineteenth century landscape artists, Theophile-Narcisse Chauvel was equally accomplished in the mediums of painting, etching and lithography. He first studied painting at the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1854, under Picot, Aligny and Bellel. As early as the following year, he was exhibiting his canvases at the prestigious Paris Salon. Early in his career, Chauvel was drawn almost exclusively to the art of landscape and although he never formally joined the now famous landscape artists of the Barbizon School, he became close friends with most of the artists, including, Daubigny, Rousseau, Diaz and Jules Dupre. These masters either sought Chauvel's advice for their own etchings or (in the case of Diaz and Dupre) commissioned him to make etchings after their designs. |
| Chauvel's first original etching was published in 1859. In total he created forty-one original etchings, most depicting the area in and around the forest of Fontainebleau. In this important era his etchings, along with those of Daubigny and Charles Jacque, form the summit of French landscape art. | |
| The awards Chauvel received for his great landscape art are numerous. In 1879 he was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion d'honneur from the French government. He was also awarded the medaille d'honneur in 1881, the grand prix du Rome (in both 1889 and 1900) and was appointed an Officier of the Legion d'honneur in 1896. | |

A brilliant early tonal printing and in excellent condition throughout. This original etching entitled, Landscape represents a superb example of the famous landscape art of Theophile Chauvel, one of France's great nineteenth century masters. |
