Note: Nicholas Toussaint Charlet: One of France's most famous lithographic artists of the early nineteenth century, Nicholas-Toussaint Charlet entered the atelier of Antoine-Jean Gros in 1815. Gros had been Napoleon's favourite painter and Charlet at first followed in his master's footsteps by creating imagery of military nostalgia. Yet by the year of 1820 (in which he quite the studio of Gros) Nicholas Toussaint Charlet had emerged as one of France's most esteemed lithographic artists with a style and a temperament all his own. During the same year he visited London with his close friend, Theodore Gericault. These two great artists often worked together during this time.
During the following twenty-five years Nicholas Toussaint Charlet created hundreds of original lithographs, many dealing with the life of the often neglected Napoleonic veteran, working people, children and the general activities within towns and cities. In this regard some scholars have compared Charlet's visual imagery to the novels and writings of Balzac. One of Charlet's most ardent admirers was none other than Eugene Delacroix, perhaps the greatest French painter of the time. In 1838 Charlet became a professor of the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris and remained there in that capacity until his death in 1845.
Like Raffet, Charlet produced yearly 'Album lithographiques' for the Paris publisher, Gihaut freres. Each of these albums contained at least fifteen numbered lithographs commissioned by this publisher. This original lithograph entitled, "Tout Can Vaut Point Mon Doux Falaise" depicts Napoleon's march through the Alps. It hails from the 1830 set and was numbered, 8.
