Cham 'Charles-Henri-Amedee, comte de Noe'

Cham Charles Henri Amedee comte de Noe - Modification au costume des jockeys Actualites Le Charivari Paris

Modification au costume des jockeys (Actualites, Le Charivari, Paris)

Cham was the pseudonym for the French artist, Charles-Henri-Amedee, the second son of Comte Louis de Noe. He produced some of his finest original lithographs for the Paris publisher, "Le Charivari", such as this original lithograph entitled, "Modification au costume des jockeys..." created for the series entitled, 'Actualites" (News). In this original lithograph, Cham comically depicts the hazards of horse racing during the mid nineteenth century and suggests that the publisher has invented a safety helmet to protect the ever vulnerable heads of steeple chase riders. This impression contains the series title and the number '401" in the upper margin. It also includes the publishing and printer's details, "Maison Martinet, 172 r de Rivoli et 41 rue Vivienne", "Lith. Destouchet, 28 r. Paradis, Pre, Paris.", and the full "title in French, "Modification au costume des jockeys, proposee par le Charivari, afin d'amortir la gravite des chutes sur la tete. si frequentes dans tout steeple chase." which loosely translates to (Modification of the costume of jockeys, proposed by Le Charivari, refined to break the fall on the head, which is frequent in any steeple chase.) The number appearing to the lower right signifies that this is Cham's 535th original lithograph. This is a fine, original example of the satirical art published by the journal, 'Le Charivari, and the lithographic art created by the French artist, Charles-Henri-Amedee, pseudonym 'Cham'

Note: 'Cham' was the pseudonym for Charles-Henri-Amedee, the second son of Comte Louis de Noe. Being of noble birth he was intended for a career in the Ministry of Finance. Cham, however, had different intentions. He studied painting techniques under Paul Delaroche and the art of lithography in the studio of Nicholas-Toussaint Charlet. His first lithograph was published in 1839 and for the following forty years his art concentrated upon amusing scenes of middle class life, ranging from the foibles of fashion to the hazards of horse racing. His many lithographs comprise a wonderful comic study of French life and culture during the mid nineteenth century.
The Golden Age of French satirical art is generally held to be the era from 1830 to 1850. The lithographs published by the Paris journal, "Le Charivari", were at the center. Founded by the artist, writer and editor, Charles Philipon (1804-1862), "Le Charivari" commenced its daily publication in 1832. By means of both its art and commentaries this journal led the attack upon France's political leaders, royalty, priesthood, and any other possibly corrupt individuals and institutions. Artists Charles Philipon commissioned for satirical lithographs included such masters as Daumier, Gavarni Travies and others.
By 1845, the French middle class had asserted itself as a major economic and social force. Their activities and culture became a primary subject for satirical artists. Unlike the biting attacks upon those in power, satirical observations of the middle class were of a more gentle and amusing nature. Undoubtedly, "Le Charivari's" most popular caricaturist in this vein was Cham.
During the mid 1850's - 1860's the French satirical artist, 'Charles-Henri-Amedee, worked on a series of lithographs under the general title of 'Actualites' which means (News / News of the Day, or Daily News). Cham produced some of his finest original lithographs for the Paris publisher, 'Le Charivari'. In this satirical lithograph entitled, "Modification au costume des jockeys...", he suggests that the publisher has invented a safety helmet to protect the ever vulnerable heads of steeple chase riders.). The complete title for this original lithograph is "Modification au costume des jockeys, proposee par le Charivari, afin d'amortir la gravite des chutes sur la tete. si frequentes dans tout steeple chase". The English translation is (Modification of the costume of jockeys, proposed by "Le Charivari", refined to break the fall on the head, which is frequent in any steeple chase.) The number appearing to the lower right signifies that this is Cham's 535th original lithograph. This is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by Cham the pseudonym for the French artist, Charles-Henri-Amedee.
An original lithograph, "Modification au costume des jockeys (Actualites, Le Charivari, Paris)" was created by Cham around 1862-1865. In this scene, Cham comically depicts the hazards of horse racing during the mid nineteenth century by portraying two riders on their steeds wearing outrageous safety helmets to protect their ever vulnerable heads as they jump over a tall hedge or fence. The Steeplechase is an equestrian sport that originated in Ireland in the 18th century. It is a distance and speed race where riders on horseback are required to race and jump over various obstacles along the countryside or turf course.
