Mike Challenger

Mike Challenger - Rumour

Rumour

Mike Challenger’s original serigraph, Rumour, explores the interplay of shape, light and color within an interior. We recognise a fireplace, a doorway, walls and windows, yet all is changed by geometric forms. Rumour is thus a world apart, existing under its own rules.

This original silkscreen is printed upon smooth, archival paper and with large, full margins as published in London in 1977. It is signed, titled, dated and numbered, ‘38/50’, by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Rumour represents both a large and impressive example of the art created by the contemporary British artist, Michael Challenger.

Title: Rumour

Note: Michael Challenger 'Mike Challenger': A post war British artist, Michael Challenger studied at Goldsmith’s College of Art, London, (1960) and at the Slade School of Art (1964), London. He began exhibiting his art in 1964 and since that time his work has been viewed in the United States, Germany, Austria, Holland and elsewhere. A full member of the Printmakers’ Council of Great Britain, Mike Challenger has also taught art techniques at both Goldsmith’s College and at the Slade. His art is now included in such major collections as the Tate and the Victoria & Albert Museums, London.
In some ways, Mike Challenger’s art recalls the work of other masters of compelling perspectives, such as M. C. Escher or Albers. Yet his work is distinctly his own and Challenger credits the music of Eric Satie as one of his primary inspirations. In a sense his forms and colors react as a musical composition, exploring both dissonance and resonance. These optical conundrums lie at the heart of Michael Challenger’s art. Such is clearly the case with this original silkscreen. In this interior scene, the artist explores the interplay of shape, light and color. We recognise a fireplace, a doorway, walls and windows, yet all is changed by geometric forms. Rumour is thus a world apart, existing under its own rules.
