Jacob Cats: A fine eighteenth century Dutch painter,
etcher and designed of tapestries, Jacob Cats studied art under Abraham
Starre and Pieter Louw, in Amsterdam. He gained his greatest fame for
his landscape depictions, which many compared to the art of Berchem and
Adriaan van de Velde, in its poetical rendering of nature. As an original
etcher, Cats concentrated upon both views of Amsterdam and upon rural
landscapes. |

Today the paintings and etchings of Jacob Cats may be seen
at many international museums, including, the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam,
the University of Liege and the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. |

This original etching hails from a series of six miniature
landscape views the artist created in 1768. It is amazing that within
such a small space, Cats has depicted a charming scene with both a wealth
of detail and atmospheric effects. This is the mark of a truly gifted
artist and etcher. |

Condition: |
Printed upon 18th century hand-made, laid paper and with
margins extending well past the plate-mark on all sides. Signed by the
artist within the plate and dated '1768'. A finely printed example bearing
all the lines and tones of an early impression and in excellent condition
throughout. Altogether, this original etching represents a superb example
of the famous eighteenth century landscape art of Jacob Cats. |
