"Love's Last Memory" illustrates a method of printmaking invented by the Spanish American artist, Federico Castellon which he termed, "lithographic-lifting technique". Basically this was a tonal method Castellon employed during the 1960's here washes of tusche were used to bring light to areas of dark, thus creating more of a tonal composition. This original lithograph is printed upon hand-made, laid paper bearing the 'BFK Rives' watermark and with full, deckled margins as published in the limited edition of one hundred and fifty impressions around 1965. It is signed and numbered, T6/150, by Federico Castellon in pencil along the lower margin. (The 'T' probably signifies 'Trial Proof' and thus this impression was taken before the actual edition was pulled.) |

Note: | Frederico Castellon: Somewhere between dreams and nightmares exists the famous imagery of Frederico Castellon. Containing elements of the surreal, satire and his own powerful fantasy world, Castellon's paintings, etchings and lithographs, such as this original lithograph entitled, "Love's Last Memory" have long inhabited our imaginations. |
Born in Spain, Frederico Castellon moved with his family to New York at the age of seven. Almost completely self-taught, Castellon often returned to work in his first country and even received a fellowship from the Ministry of State of the Spanish Republic (1933). He became a citizen of the United States in 1943.
Frederico Castellon's art first received major international exposure at the famous Exhibition of Spanish Artists, Paris, 1935. The other participants included Picasso, Gris and Miro. At this time, Castellon's art was confined mostly to painting and drawing. His first lithographs and etchings appeared after 1937, and for the balance of his life he dedicated himself mainly to the graphic arts.
"Love's Last Memory" is a striking example of his lithographic art. It illustrates a method of printmaking invented by Castellon which he termed, "lithographic-lifting technique". Basically this was a tonal method Castellon employed during the 1960's where washes of tusche were used to bring light to areas of dark, thus creating more of a tonal composition. The effect created within this original lithograph symbolically charged image is magnificent.
As an original printmaker and a prominent instructor, Frederico Castellon's influence upon American art was substantial. He taught at Columbia University (1948-1961), the Pratt Institute (1951-1961), Queen's College and at the prestigious National Academy of Design. During these years Castellon also received awards and grants from such institutions as the Guggenheim Institute, the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the Library of Congress and the National Academy. Today his remarkable etchings and lithographs are included in most major public collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Chicago Art Institute.
