Antonio Casanova y Estorach - "La Lecon de Musique": This delightful etching depicts an elderly gentleman in his livery. He is perhaps a servant in an important household. In his kitchen he teaches a bird to sing with his whistling. The cat curled up at his feet and the puckered expression of this gentleman reinforce the pervading atmosphere of warmth and good humor. "La Lecon de Musique" (The Music Lesson) is an original etching created by the Spanish artist, Antonio Casanova y Estorach in 1879. This impression is printed on fine, hand-made, laid paper as published in New York by Dodd Mead & Company for the portfolio, "Etchings by French Artists" in 1888. This fine etching is signed and dated in the plate by the artist. |

Note: | Antonio Casanova y Estorach: A nineteenth century Spanish painter and etcher, Casanova y Estorach studied art techniques in both Madrid and Rome under such masters as Federico Madrazo, Carlos Rivera and Claudio Lorenzale. Showing early promise, he began exhibiting his paintings and etchings at major expositions in Madrid and Barcelona as early as 1865. Antonio Casanova moved permanently to Paris in 1876 and for the following twenty years exhibited his art in that city. |
As an etcher, Casanova was known for his soft and velvety lines, often combing drypoint with etching to gain his effects.
