Note: Giovanni Domenico Campiglia: An eighteenth century Italian painter, designer and engraver, Giovanni Domenico Campiglia studied art in Florence under Tomasso Redi and Lorenzo del Moro. During his career, Campiglia was mainly employed at Rome and Florence, both painting and engraving historical subjects and portraits. Giovanni Domenico Campiglia worked for over a decade on the Museum Florentium, designing and engraving some of the best works in that famous collection.
: This original portrayal of Pietro Medici is of particular interest because it depicts a patron of the arts and a prominent member of Italy’s most powerful family.
The Museum Florentium: A. F. Gori’s monumental Museum Florentium set out to engrave all the portraits of painters, architects, sculptors and patrons of the arts in the major galleries of Florence. This vast undertaking was issued in individual parts as it took over thirty years (1731-1766) to complete. The bulk of the engraving fell to four of Florence’s best artists, Giovanni Domenico Campiglia, Pietro Pazzi, Cosimo Mogalli and Lorenzini.
: With its high level of artistry the Museum Florentium is now regarded as one of the greatest series of portrait engravings published in the eighteenth century. It also stands as a fascinating visual record of artist related portraits with a general emphasis upon the Renaissance era to the mid eighteenth century.
