Throughout her career as a figurative artist Shirley Campbell has often explored what is generally termed the more shadowy elements of society. She has concentrated upon such figures as the homeless, prostitutes, alcoholics and motorcycle gangs. Hers, however, is not an art of commentary or criticism; rather she focuses upon the humanity to be found in these outcast sub-cultures with both realism and compassion. Thus, in Witch Doctor Jesus Don Chuey, her hand is drawn towards delineating the magnificent, compelling head of her sitter. | |
