Jacques Callot: The most influential etcher of seventeenth century France,
Jacques Callot was born into a noble family. Early biographies indicate
that he was intended for government service or the church but his inclination
for the arts was so strong that, during his early youth, he ran away to
Italy on several occasions. On one of these he made his way to Florence
in the company of gypsies. |
|
In Rome, Callot was reunited with his lifelong friend, Israel Henriet
(Nancy, 1590 - Paris, 1661). A painter and engraver, Henriet would later
establish himself in Paris as a major publisher. There, he commissioned
etchings and engravings from such artists as Stefano Della Bella, Israel
Silvestre and, of course, Jacques Callot. The etchings of Saints Romaricus,
Leocadia, Mennas and Hermogenes and Saint Damasus were published by Henriet. |
|
Jacques Callot initially apprenticed in the engraver's studio of Canta-Gallina,
in Florence. Upon reaching Rome (1608) he further studied art techniques
under Tempesta and Giulio Parigi and engraving methods under Philippe Thomassin.
He returned to Florence in 1611 and began engraving and etching subjects
both after the old masters and after his own designs. Callot returned to
France around 1621 and quickly established himself as that country's most
esteemed etcher. During the following years he created such individual
masterworks as The Siege of Breda (commissioned by the Infanta Clara Eugenia),
The Siege of La Rochelle (commissioned by King Louis XIII), The
Fair at Impruneta, and The Temptation of Saint Anthony, and such famous series
as The Miseries of War, The Caprices, Balli di Sfessania, Life
of the Prodigal Son and The Fantasies. |
|
The etched art of Jacques Callot's final years was devoted
primarily to religious subjects. From 1631 to 1635 he created such sets as "The Life of the Virgin",
"The Great Apostles" and "Images of all the Saints of the Year". The "Saints"
was Callot's final work of art and was published by Henriet in 1636, one year following his death.
These etchings were initially printed four to each page (excluding the frontispiece) and covered
the entire calendar year. "Saint Romaricus, Saint Leocadia, Saints Mennas & Hermogenes and Saint Damasus",
for example, represent the days of December 8, 9, 10 and 11. |
|
"Images of all the Saints of the Year" was a very popular set of etchings and before long both later
editions and counterfeit versions appeared. In later editions the rectangular space below the image of each Saint is
filled in with text. This set of four original Jacques Callot etchings represents scarce first edition impressions
published by Henriet in Paris in 1636. |
