Luigi Calamatta's original engraving, Murillo, is based upon a self-portrait by this famous Spanish artist of the seventeenth century, Bartolome Esteban Murillo. By the mid nineteenth century Luigi Calamatta had established himself as perhaps the finest portrait engraver of his time. Within the medium of engraving, Calamatta's attention to tone and texture and his delineation of the effects of light and shade, were surpassed by no other artist. This is clearly seen in his 1864 engraving, Murillo. The British Museum, London, includes an impression of Murillo in its permanent collection. It may be viewed online under the registration number, 1901,1022.1988. |

Note: | Luigi Calamatta: A distinguished nineteenth century Italian engraver of old master scenes and contemporary portraits, both after his own designs, and the designs of others, Luigi Calamatta first studied drawing techniques in Rome, under Giangiacomo. He then studied the art of engraving under both Marchetti and Ricciani. In 1822 Luigi Calamatta went to Paris and practised his art in the circle of the great artist, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). Most of his early portraits, including those of Niccolo Paganini, George Sand, Mme. Dudevant, Alexandre Martin, The Duke of Orleans, Duclos, Ingres and others are based upon Ingres's drawings. |
Luigi Calamatta first exhibited his art at the Paris Salon in 1827. In 1834 he produced one of his most famous engravings, the "Mask of Napoleon", from the death mask of the deposed French Emperor taken by Dr. Antommarchi at St. Helena. In 1837 Luigi Calamatta accepted the post of Professor of Engraving at the Ecole Royale in Brussels. He remained at this position until 1861, when he accepted the Chair of Engraving in Milan.
During his distinguished career Luigi Calamatta was commissioned to engrave some of Europe's most famous individuals. His later portraits include those of the King of Spain, Isabella, Queen of Spain, Princess Matilde Bonaparte, Vittorio Emanuele II, Giuseppe Mazzini, Felicite de Lamennais, Madame Marcotte, Guizote and Francesca da Rimini. Some of these fine portraits were designed by such contemporary painters as Ary Scheffer, Delaroche and Deveria. Almost half, however, were completely designed and engraved by Calamatta.
Bartolome Esteban Murillo: A major Spanish painter, Bartolome Esteban Murillo was an apprentice of Juan del Castillo. He began working independently in 1639 and first supported himself by making small religious paintings for export to the colonies in South America. Murillo quickly gained fame for his religious paintings and genre scenes and received numerous commissions from churches and monasteries. In 1660 Murillo founded the Seville Academy of Painting.
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the paintings of Bartolome Murillo enjoyed widespread popularity. Today his art is housed in such collections as The Louvre, Paris, The Prado, Madrid, and the National Gallery, Washington, D. C.
