Note: | The Montreal Daily Star: The Montreal Daily Star (founded in 1867) became a major publisher of original Canadian prints particularly in regard to the Montreal Winter Carnival. Beginning in 1883, it was Canada's first large winter celebration and predated Quebec City's Carnival by eleven years. Highly competitive sporting events took place throughout the city. The Winter Carnival became a hugely successful event. The Montreal Star and competing publishers thus hired Canada's greatest artists to commemorate the activities. One need only mention that three of the major artists covering the Carnival at the time were Henri Julien, William Raphael and Robert Harris. Their original lithographs in this field stand as an important historical and artistic document of nineteenth century Canada. A large majority of these lithographs were printed by the 19th century Canadian printer, the Burland Lithographic Co. in Montreal. |
