Note: |
Johann Burger: Johann Burger was considered
a master of genre scenes, portraits and studies of the nude. His particular
and meticulous method of engraving emphasized both form and texture.
In Dame mit dem Papagei, for example, his ability to translate the elements
of light and shade and the actual texture of each fabric is remarkable. |
|
Frans van Mieris: A famous 17th century Dutch painter, Frans van Mieris studied
under Gerard Dou and Abraham Tempel. Most esteemed for his genre paintings,
Mieris was at his best in his representations of silks, satins and jewels.
Raised in humble surroundings (he had twenty-two brothers and sisters),
Frans van Mieris eventually became Painter to the Prince. |
|
Today his paintings will be found in such collections as
the Louvre, the Hermitage, Buckingham Palace and the Uffizi. Dame mit
dem Papagei is in the collection of the Pinakothek, Munich. |
|
Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the late 19th early 20th centuries leading art journals around
the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on
a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were
commissioned and published by The Studio, in London, Pan, in Germany,
The Print Connoisseur, in America, and Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in
Vienna. |
|
Vervielfaltigende Kunst issued it’s first original
print in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks
by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch, Hungarian and English
artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most
of its rival publishers, Vervielfaltigende Kunst became a spearhead for
the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist
artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, its
superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, Vervielfaltigende
Kunst is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and
individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the
international market |
