Buntsu, a 20th century Japanese artist: This original sumi-e painting, "A Water Jug" was created by the artist around 1950. The aim of classic sumi-e painting is to capture the essence of an object or scene with the greatest economy of strokes. A sumi-e artist strives not to simply reproduce the appearance of an object, but to reveal its spirit. Buntsu's water jug surely conveys this principle. |

Note: | Sumi-e painting has been practiced in Asian countries for well over one thousand years. It is often (as is here the case with "A Water Jug") combined with calligraphy as the two disciplines require the same materials and state of mind. Calligraphy is the artistic representation of written characters using ink and brush; sumi-e is the artistic representation of an object or scene with ink and brush. The key to sumi-e is to convey the essence of the subject with the greatest economy of means. The subject should come to life with only a few strokes of the brush. The act of creation and not the artist, therefore, is all important |
A sumi-e painting requires what is termed the ‘Four Treasures’: an ink stone with a shallow depression carved into it, a brush with wolf or horse hair, mulberry (rice) paper and the ink stick. Making the ink is part of the creative process. The artist begins by sprinkling a few drops of water on the stone. He then holds the ink stick upright and makes circles with it on the stone. The stick releases soot into the water thus creating the ink. A skilled sumi-e painter will make exactly the right amount of ink for each painting as this type of ink cannot be stored for later use. When the composition is complete the artist usually signs the work by using his red seal.
Buntu's "A Water Jug" is a fine example of sumi-e painting. Graceful calligraphy merges with the actual image. In true sumi-e style a sense of natural form and movement has been brilliantly rendered with only a few, simple lines.
