Saint Mark's Column, Venice

Alfred Louis Brunet-Debaines's original etching, "Saint Mark's Column, Venice" is attributed to a drawing or watercolour by the British artist, Richard Parkes Bonington. In the foreground is the famous column of St. Mark. To the right is the column of St. Theodore. Behind the second column is the façade of the Biblioteca di San Marco and, in the background, the domes of Santa Maria della Salute are seen. It was printed in 1878 upon fine hand-made, laid paper and with full, large margins as published by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, London in a leading British art journal, The Portfolio founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton. This impression is signed by the artist in the plate to the lower left. "Saint Mark's Column, Venice" is a fine, original example of the 19th century landscape and architectural art created by the French artist, Alfred Brunet-Debaines. The British Museum in London includes an impression of this original etching in its permanent collection.

Note: Alfred Louis Brunet Debaines 'Alfred Brunet-Debaines': A French etcher of street scenes and architecture, Alfred Brunet-Debaines began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1863. At this time he also learned etching techniques under such masters as Maxime Lalanne, Leon Gaucherel, and Jules Jacquemart. Brunet-Debaines exhibited his first etchings at the Paris Salon in 1866.
  Around 1870 Brunet-Debaines was invited to England by the influential writer and critic, Philip Gilbert Hamerton. Hamerton commissioned this artist to contribute original etchings to his publications, such as, The Portfolio and Landscape. Brunet-Debaines thus spent a large part of his career working and living in London and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1872 to 1886. Many major museums in both France and England include examples of his etched art in their permanent collections.
  St. Mark's Column, Venice was published in a leading British art journal, The Portfolio. Founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), it was published in annual issues from 1870 to 1892. Hamerton was the influential author of Etching and Etchers, and for The Portfolio, he regularly commissioned such fine etchers as Seymour Haden, D. Y. Cameron, Ernest George, Robert Walker Macbeth, Alfred Brunet-Debaines and E. P. Brandard to contribute original art. Today these etchings are collected as valuable examples of latter 19th century British and French art.
  Richard Parkes Bonington: A major influence upon the landscape art of the French Barbizon School is the watercolours and paintings of Richard Parkes Bonington. Despite his very short life this artist plays a pivotal role in the development of French landscape art. Richard Parkes Bonington became a student of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, at the age of fifteen. He was also an occasional pupil of Baron de Gros. In 1822 Bonington visited Venice and created his first masterful drawings and watercolours there. He then returned to England and, as a virtually unknown artist, exhibited his art at the British Institution. His reputation as a major artist was now secured. Regrettably the artist died of consumption several years later.
  The great French painter, Delacroix, wrote, "Other artists were perhaps more powerful or more accurate than Bonington, but no one in the modern school, perhaps no earlier artist, possessed the ease of execution which makes his works, in a certain sense, diamonds, by which the eye is pleased and fascinated, quite independently of the subject and the particular representation of nature."
  The British Museum in London includes an impression of St. Mark's Column, Venice in its permanent collection. It is listed under the registration number, 1878.0511.205.
