Roy H. Brown 'Roy Brown': A talented American landscape
painter and illustrator, Roy H. Brown first studied art in New York at the
Art Students League. He then completed his artistic education in Paris,
studying under both Menard and Rafaelli. After completing his studies, Roy Brown
remained in Paris for several years and frequently exhibited his art there.
He returned permanently to live in the United States shortly before the
outbreak of World War One (1914-1918). |
|
By 1920, Roy H. Brown had established a national reputation in America for both
his landscape paintings and drawings. He was elected a full member of the
Academy of National Artists, the American Art Association of Paris, American
Watercolor Society, National Arts Club and an Associate of the prestigious
National Academy of Design, Washington. Today examples of his art are included
in such major institutions as the Art Institute of Chicago, USC Fisher Gallery,
New York Historical Society, Northwestern University and the National Arts
Club, New York. Roy H. Brown was also a recipient of the Altman Prize for
art. |
|
Village View, France dates from Roy Brown's working years in Europe (c. 1910).
It is an exceptional composition created entirely in heavy graphite. It
strikes a similar chord to the art of Roy Brown's great teacher in Paris, Jean-Francois
Raffaelli (1850-1924), in that the scene is dominated by patterns of rapid
yet graceful lines. Raffaelli was most noted for his colour etchings of
urban scenes. Here, Roy Brown seems to be exploring comparable compositional
elements within the medium of black and white drawing. Village View,
France is clearly from the hand of a major landscape artist. |
