John George Brown created only one original etching, Business Neglected, which was published in 1884. Like his paintings, it is a masterful study of light, line and form. This particular impression, printed in 1884 upon fine silk is signed in pencil by the artist along the lower margin. Business Neglected represents a superb, original example of the nineteenth century American art of John George Brown. |

Artist: | Brown, John George (Durham, England, 1831 - New York City, 1913) |
Date: | 1884 |
Medium: | Original Etching on Silk |
Note: | John George Brown: One of America's leading genre painters of the nineteenth century, John George Brown was born in England and apprenticed as a glass cutter at Newcastle-on-Tyne. He then worked at this trade in Edinburgh while studying art at the School of the Royal Scottish Academy, under Robert Scott Lauder. Shortly after 1850 Brown moved to London and supported himself as a portrait painter. |
In 1853, John George Brown emigrated to Brooklyn, again working as a glass cutter at the Flint Glass Works. At this time he also completed his art studies at the National Academy of Design, New York. J. G. Brown rented his first studio in 1856 and began exhibiting his art shortly thereafter. His 1860 painting, "His First Cigar", gained for him an immediate national reputation. For the following forty years Brown was of the most successful artists in the United States.
John George Brown was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1862 and a full Academician in 1863. He was also a member of the American Water Color Society. Today examples of his art are found in such major collections as the Corcoran Art Gallery, Washington, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Brown's fame rested upon his depictions of the homeless children of New York City, many of whom survived by selling newspapers or shining shoes. Such work gained for him the nickname, "the boot-black Raphael". Far from reality, his portrayals are both sentimental and cheerful. An adept businessman, Brown knew that the last thing his affluent, Gilded Age patrons desired was a reminder of social ills and economic exploitation. Yet one cannot deny that John George Brown was a most talented artist and his scenes of children are as captivating today as they were in the nineteenth century.
Partly because John George Brown was in such great demand for his paintings, he created only one original etching. Business Neglected was published in 1884. Like his paintings, it is a masterful study of light, line and form. Business Neglected was printed in an edition of approximately 100 hand signed impressions. Of these a small handful were printed upon fine silk while the large majority were on wove paper. This particular impression is on silk.
