Note: | Francis Bruce Brown: A Canadian landscape painter and architect, Francis Bruce Brown received his B. Arch in 1923 and M. Arch in 1925 at the University of Toronto. He was also awarded a travelling scholarship and thus went to France to study at the Fontainbleu School of Fine Arts (1923-24). A year later he joined his father's architectural firm, John Francis Brown (1866-1942), in Toronto. Francis Bruce Brown's architectural speciality was churches. During his career he designed over 100 churches throughout the country. His other projects include designs for the Legislative Buildings, Victoria, BC., and the Monroe County Court House, Rochester, NY. F. Bruce Brown was President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, an Associate in the Royal Institute of British Architects and an Honorary Fellow in the American Institute of Architects. |
Francis Bruce Brown's position as a prominent architect prohibited a full-time career as a landscape painter. Yet, as one can see in both his paintings and watercolours, he possessed a distinct talent that was encouraged by his companion, Alfred Joseph Casson.
An original watercolour, Autumn: Ottawa Valley dates from 1955. It clearly indicates Francis Bruce Brown's fine talent as a watercolour arist and as a composer of compositional elements.
