Note:	August Bromse: An early twentieth century Czech painter, lithographer and etcher, August Bromse studied art in Prague and Berlin. His art was widely exhibited in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Although Bromse's methods were unique, scholars have pointed to elements of both Expressionism and Symbolism in his graphic art.
	Rat Krespel was commissioned in Vienna by the fine arts publisher, Vervielfaltigende Kunst. With its fine lines and tones it is a brilliant delineation of an interior where a man reading is suddenly alerted by the tell-tale sound of an intruder. This original lithograph is a striking interpretation of Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann's Character, Rat Krespel. The story of Rat Krespel was first published in 1816 in Fouque's Frauentaschenbuch and later included in Hoffmann's Die Serapionsbruder. Hoffmann's stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's opera Les Contes d' Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). It is noted that Rat Krespel is actually a caricatured self-portrait of Hoffmann. E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) also wrote such stories as The Nutcracker, the Mouse King, Sandman, and others.
	Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the early twentieth century leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by The Studio, in London, Pan, in Germany, The Print Connoisseur, in America, and Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in Vienna.
	Vervielfaltigende Kunst issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, Vervielfaltigende Kunst became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, its superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market.

Bearing the publisher's address and the words, "August Bromse, Rat Krespel, Lithographie" (Lithograph) along the lower margin. Signed by artist with his 'A. B.' monogram within the lithograph to the lower right. A finely printed impression and in very good condition throughout. Altogether, Rat Krespel represents a prime, original example of the art of August Bromse.
