Pierre Brebiette

Pierre Brebiette - Santa Maria

Santa Maria

Pierre Brebiette's original engraving and etching, "Santa Maria" is printed on early 17th century laid paper as printed around 1635. It is signed "P. Brebiette" by the artist in the image to the lower left. The scene depicts Saint Mary in a landscape surrounded by putti mischievously playing around her. Here, one putti is sitting on her lap reaching for the two putti carrying a large cross up towards the clouds and the putti to her left is making a floral offering while a goat leans up to munch on the gift. Santa Maria is a fine, original example of the early seventieth century art created by the French artist, Pierre Brebiette.

Artist: Brebiette, Pierre (Mantes, 1596 - Paris, 1650)

Note: Pierre Brebiette: An early seventieth century French painter and engraver, Pierre Brebiette was a student of Lallemand. To complete his education he traveled in Italy for several years and both lived and worked most notably in Venice. Upon his return to France, Brebiette gained fame for both his paintings and engravings. In the latter category he was unlike most of his French contemporaries in that his engravings were usually based upon his own designs. Pierre Brebiette was appointed a Painter to the King of France in 1637.
Some of Brebiette's more famous engravings and etchings include, a Self-Portrait, 'The Adoration of the Magi', 'The Virgin Mary Kneeling before the Infant Savior', 'The Virgin with the Infant Crowned', 'The Conversion of St. Paul' and 'The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian'. Santa Maria was probably created for the Opera diversa a Peter Brebiette inventa, which was published in Paris in 1638 and included a number of the artist's engravings based upon various subjects.
