Note: |
Sir Frank Brangwyn: One of the most influential etchers
of the early twentieth century, Sir Frank Brangwyn had already established
his reputation as a major painter and watercolourist before he attempted
his first etching in 1900. He was then quickly drawn more and more to
the many possibilities of this artistic medium and by 1926 had completed
331 original etchings. Most of Brangwyn's art concentrated upon figure
studies, architectural and marine subjects. He traveled extensively and
many of his most famous etchings are of continental views, particularly
scenes from Normandy, Belgium and Italy. |
|
Frank Brangwyn's fame rests upon his method of etchings
as much as upon his actual deceptions and imagery. As is the case with
this original example, his etched lines are often very heavily bitten
and a thick film of ink has been left on portions of the plate to create
dramatic tonal values. 'Purists' occasionally charge that Brangwyn's etchings
are thus too theatrical. Collectors, however, see genius in Brangwyn's
methods and examples of his original etchings have thus been avidly sought
after for more than eighty years. |
|
The Hay-Cart is a stunning example of Brangwyn's
art. Here, he gives full and accomplished play to his famous atmospheric
effects, contrasting light, shade and depth. As is the case with Brangwyn's
best art, it is a powerful and convincing image. |
|
The Hay-Cart was one of four etchings created by
Brangwyn for the exhibition of his etched art at the Newbolt Gallery,
London, in 1908. The scene was based upon his sketch from the French town
of Montreuil. In his catalogue, (See included entry) W. Gaunt fails to
mention the size of the edition. It is, however, believed The Hay-Cart
was printed in one and only one edition of less than two hundred impressions,
including the handful of initial impressions marked A. P. (Artist's Proof)
in the lower left corner. The plate was then destroyed to prohibit a further
printing. |
