Note: | Pierre Bonnard: When Pierre Bonnard's first poster appeared on Paris walls in March of 1891 it so impressed an older artist by the name of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec that he promptly announced to his friends that he would try his own hand at poster making. During the following years, Bonnard went on to establish himself as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century in many artistic mediums. |
Pierre Bonnard first studied art at the Academie Julian with fellow classmates, Vuillard and Roussel. Together the three artists formed the cornerstone of the Nabis Group (1893 to 1899). Like most of the Nabis, Bonnard was influenced by the art of Gaugin and Redon. Yet even in his early paintings and posters Bonnard was unique and his work proved a much greater influence upon others.
Bonnard's association with the master publisher, Ambrose Vollard, resulted in a series of masterpieces in the medium of the 'livre d'artiste'. Beginning in 1900, with his lithographs for Verlaine's Parallelment, Bonnard established himself as one of the finest original artists of the book of the era. Future projects with Vollard included "Daphnis and Chloe" (1902), "Dingo" (1924) and "La Vie de Sainte Monique" (1930). This original etching was created by Bonnard for "La Vie de Sainte Monique" (The Life of Saint Monique).
For La Vie, Bonnard contributed seventeen etchings, twenty-nine lithographs and a number of small wood engravings which were used as head and tail pieces. He wrote, "I illustrated Sainte Monique. Vollard had conceived it in the forms of dialogues, like a play. To follow the rhythm of the text I introduced etchings and wood engravings. It's a book that was a long time in the making. I started it in 1920, and it wasn't published until ten years later." *
The publishing history for the original Bonnard prints found in "La Vie de Sainte-Monique" (The Life of Saint Monique) is thoroughly documented. In total each etching and lithograph was printed in limited edition of 340 impressions. Each original print contained Bonnard's distinctive monogramme -- seen above the lower plate-mark. Bonnard then canceled both the etching plates and the lithographic stones by drawing two faint horizontal lines across the image.
In 1965 The Collector's Guild of New York received permission to print and publish a posthumous edition of "Jeune Fille Lisant" (Young Girl Reading) from the original copper plate. The Collector's Guild did not specify the size of the edition but it is believed to be approximately 200 to 250 impressions.
