Alfred Boilot: A French etcher and engraver upon
both wood and copper, Alfred Boilot studied printmaking techniques under
Butin and Damman, in Paris. He participated in many expositions including
the Paris Blanc et Noir Exhibition of 1886. Alfred Boilot gained recognition
for his fine and detailed style and was frequently commissioned by French,
English and American publishers of prints. |
|
Jose Jimenes Aranda: A Spanish painter and illustrator,
Jose Jimenes Aranda studied at the Art School of Seville. He later became a
professor of art there. During his very successful career Aranda was awarded
medals for his paintings at expositions in Madrid, Paris, Vienna, Munich,
Berlin and Chicago. He also illustrated a number of books such as, Daudet's,
Tartarin sur les Alpes, Nunez de Ara's, La Vision du
frere Martin and an edition of Don Quichotte. |
|
The 19th Century Remarque 'Proof': During the latter
nineteenth century many major publishers of engravings and etchings in
both England and America issued a small number of 'proof' impressions
before publishing the regular edition. Proof impressions were struck before
the title of the work was added along the lower margin and were printed
on superior papers -- usually china, Japon or vellum. They also contained
an added etched image (the 'Remarque') within the lower margin. In Un
Collectionneur the Remarque depicts an artist's pallet and brushes.
As well, proof impressions were the only engravings to be hand signed
by the etcher or designer, or both. |
|
The New York publishers, C. Klackner and Frederick
Koppel both issued proof impressions signed by their artists and designers.
These included Winslow Homer, William Magrath, James S. King, Jose Jimenes
Aranda and Leon Moran. The majority of Remarque Proof impressions printed
by these publishers were usually limited to small editions of twenty-five
or less. This is probably the case with Un Collectionneur (A Collector). |
