Guard Dog (Bull Terrier?) is an original nineteenth century etching by Karl Bodmer published by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, 54, Fleet Street, London for Philip Gilbert Hamerton's Chapters on Animals in 1874. Of Bodmer's etched art Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894) wrote; "There is hardly a bird or quadruped of Western Europe that he has not drawn, and drawn, too, with a closeness of observation satisfactory alike to the artist and the naturalist. The bird or beast is always the central subject with Karl Bodmer, but he generally surrounds them with a graceful landscape, full of intricate and mysterious suggestions, with here and there some plant in clearer definition, drawn with perfect fidelity and care." Note: The British Museum, London, includes an impression of Guard Dog (Bull Terrier?) in its permanent collection. |

Note: | Karl Bodmer: An important painter, etcher, lithographer and explorer, Karl Bodmer was one of the first artists to bring the forest and its animals to the artistic forefront. A student of Jakob Meyer in Switzerland and of Cornu in Paris, Bodmer was already employed at the age of twenty-two, engraving German views. On the following year (1832) Bodmer was engaged by the Prussian Prince Maximilian as an artist for an important exploratory expedition to the American West. For two years Karl Bodmer drew and painted the hitherto unknown tribes of North Dakota and Montana. He lived and worked among the Blackfeet, Mandan, Cree and Assiniboin Tribes, creating (along with George Catlin) a vital artistic record of Native life before it was forever changed by westward expansion. Bodmer returned to Europe in 1834 and during the following years frequently exhibited his art in Paris, Marseille, Vienna and elsewhere. |
1849 marks another significant year in Karl Bodmer’s life. At this time he settled in the French forest of Barbizon (Fontainebleau). This was the beginnings of the renowned Barbizon school of art, the first group of painters and etchers devoted almost exclusively to landscape art and the true precursors of the Impressionists. While there, Bodmer befriended and worked with such great artists as Millet and Rousseau. It was also in Barbizon that Bodmer created such famous series of natural history subjects such as, Chapitres sur les Animaux, Animaux et Paysages d’apres Nature (1858) and Eaux-Fortes Animaux & Paysages par Karl Bodmer (c. 1865). This original etching entitled, Guard Dog (Bull Terrier) was initially printed for this latter named set.
In 1874 Philip Gilbert Hamerton, the influential author of Etching and Etchers and the editor of The Portfolio, acquired twelve plates from Karl Bodmer's set and reprinted them for his work, Chapters on Animals. The French etcher, Jules Jacques Veyrassat (1828-1893), also contributed eight plates to this publication.
